Wrestlers Succeeding At National Levels

Junior Alex Krom and sophomores Jon Kohler and Mike Letts have all enjoyed recent success against national competition. Krom, who redshirted the 2007-08 season, placed third at the University Nationals and Letts and Kohler were named All-Americans at the FILA Junior National Championships.

The Maryland wrestling team handed out its awards for the 2007-08 season at the annual awards picnic at Epping Forest Club House in Annapolis on May 3. Sophomore Hudson Taylor was given the John McHugh Most Outstanding Wrestler Award for the second-straight season after becoming the first Terrapin All-American since 1997.

Santoro Accepts Head Coaching Position At Lehigh

University of Maryland head wrestling coach Pat Santoro has accepted the head coaching position at Lehigh University. Santoro was the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Terrapins to their first conference title since 1973. He posted a 48-41-1 record in five seasons at Maryland, including a 33-9 mark the last two years.

Maryland wrestling head coach Pat Santoro was named the 2008 ACC Coach of the Year and sophomore Hudson Taylor was tabbed the Wrestler of the Year as announced March 31 by the Atlantic Coast Conference. Santoro led the Terrapins to their first conference crown since 1973 and Taylor earned All-America status at the NCAA Championships, the first Terp since 1997 to do so.

Sophomore Hudson Taylor stunned top-seeded and defending national champion Josh Glenn of American and then beat eighth-seeded Craig Brester of Nebraska to take third place in the 197-pound division of the 2008 NCAA Championships on March 22 at Scottrade Center. Taylor was down 5-1 against Glenn and 4-1 versus Brester but came from behind to steal both victories.

The Maryland wrestling team, which departed for St. Louis on Tuesday morning, is preparing for the 2008 NCAA Championships to be held March 20-22 at Scottrade Center. The Terrapins, who won the 2008 ACC Championship, are sending six wrestlers to the tournament, the most since 1990. The University of Maryland Athletic Department, The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) have announced an agreement that will please wrestling fans in the state of Maryland. On Saturday, March 8, 2008, the MPSSAA state wrestling tournament and the ACC Wrestling Championship are scheduled to be held in College Park, Md. The state championships will be held in Cole Field House and the ACC Championship will be held in Comcast Center.
