King was a two-time Academic All-American

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Former Maryland men's soccer standout Stephen King was named the ACC Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year, announced by Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner John Swofford on February 28. King was a two-time ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American while with the Terrapins.

The award was established in September to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sport. This is the first time the award has been given in men's soccer. Candidates for the award must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 during the last two semesters.

King finished his career second all-time in assists at Maryland with 33, while his 93 career points ranks sixth. He also scored 30 goals, which is one away from the top 10. His three-assist performance against No. 14 Virginia on November 3, 2007 tied the program record for assists in a game. He racked up 13 assists in 2007 which is the second most in school history in a single season.

King, a native of Medford, N.J., was a workhorse for the Terrapins since his arrival in College Park in 2004, earning a start in every contest Maryland played in his four seasons. He started 93 games in his career which is a Terps' record.

King was also a semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy for the second-straight year as a senior, a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, a first team All-American by College Soccer News and a first-team All-ACC honoree.

At the men's soccer banquet, King was named the 2007 Most Valuable Offensive Player and was also given the John Carlson Award and the Peter Lowery Award. The John Carlson Award is presented to the most outstanding team member, while the Peter Lowery Award is presented to the team member who exemplifies academic excellence, leadership and distinguished citizenship on campus.

King was chosen by the Chicago Fire in the third round of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft with the 40th overall pick.
