Reed scores three for the Terps in defeat

DURHAM, N.C. - Freshman attackman Travis Reed scored three goals for the No. 4 Maryland men's lacrosse team, but it wasn't enough to overcome the No. 2 Duke Blue Devils who topped the Terps, 15-7, Saturday evening at Koskinen Stadium.

Midfielder Brad Ross had two goals for the Blue Devils in the first quarter to help Duke pull out to a 6-2 lead at the first quarter-break. With Duke holding a 1-0 lead a pair of freshmen combined to tie the game for Maryland. Reed finished a wrap-around goal off of a pass by Ryan Young. The Blue Devils scored the game's next five goals to build a 6-1 lead before junior midfielder Jeremy Sieverts gave the Terps some momentum with his first goal of the season on a terrific hustle-play. Sieverts finished the effort with a low shot past Duke goalie Dan Loftus.

Duke kept the pressure on in the second quarter with three consecutive scores to build a seven-goal lead. Reed gave Maryland its only score of the second period with a fine individual effort at the 1:35 mark. He rolled around the left side of the cage, split three defenders and somehow got off a one-handed shot, which bounced past sever Duke defenders and Loftus, who lost sight of the ball in the scrum.

Sieverts opened the third quarter with another unassisted goal. This time Sieverts weaved his way through several Blue Devil defenders on the left crease and hit a shot from inside six yards. That was all the offense for the Terps, but Duke added onto its lead with three scores for a 12-4 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

After the Blue Devils scored on the face-off to begin the fourth period, Reed answered back with his third score of the game off of another assist by Young. Ross answered that for Duke with his own hat trick at the 12:04 mark. Senior Max Ritz scored his first goal of the season, but the Blue Devils answered right back with another unanswered goal to make the score 15-6. Junior Spencer McAllister tacked on Maryland's final score off an assist by Scott Tompkins.

Maryland (2-1) has its 2008 home opener on Monday, March 3, against Providence. That game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start at Ludwig Field.

Game Notes:
• With today's 15-7 loss Maryland is now 54-16 all-time vs. Duke

• Junior midfielder Dan Groot had his point-scoring streak stopped at six games.

• Jeremy Sieverts extended his point-scoring streak to six games with two goals.

• For Sieverts this was his seventh career multi-goal game and 14th multi-point game.
