Relay for Life 2008

On May 3rd, the American Cancer Society held its annual 12 hour walk-a-thon, Relay for Life at the University of Maryland. From 6:00pm on May 3rd to 6:00am on May 4th, the event provided the opportunity for the University of Maryland community to raise money and to raise awareness to help support research for the fight against cancer. Additionally, it also allowed the community and participants to remember and honor loved ones that have survived, are currently battling, or have passed on because of cancer.

Holliday to Hold Celebrity Golf Tournament

Johnny Holliday, who has been the radio voice of the Maryland Terrapins for more than 40 years, will serve as host for the second annual Johnny Holliday Scholarship Classic sponsored by Stein Mitchell & Mezines. The golf tournament will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at Norbeck Country Club, which is located at 17200 Cashell Rd. in Rockville, Md.

The No. 3 Maryland women's lacrosse team is looking for its first spot in the national semifinals since 2003 when it hosts No. 12 Duke (12-7) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Blue Devils handed the Terrapins (18-2) one of their two losses this season. Fans attending the game will only be able to park in Lot 4i.

Participants will get a chance to interact with head coach Brenda Frese, as well as, the rest of the coaching staff and players. Golfers are also invited to participate in a silent auction.

Sophomore Scott Swinson threw the sixth no-hitter in Maryland baseball history, striking out a career-high 10 batters as the University of Maryland baseball team defeated Delaware, 4-0 Tuesday afternoon, in its season finale to end the season with 30 wins. It is only the second 30-win season in school history.

Director of athletics Deborah A. Yow announced May 12 that Kerry McCoy has been named the head coach for the University of Maryland wrestling program. In three seasons as head coach at Stanford, McCoy transformed the Cardinal into a national contender after inheriting a team that went 6-8-1 in 2004-05.

University of Maryland senior linebacker Dave Philistin was named to the watch list for the 2008 Bronko Nagurski Trophy in an announcement Monday by the Football Writers Association of America. The Nagurski Trophy is awarded to the best defensive player in college football and is sponsored by the Charlotte Touchdown Club.

Senior midfielder Dana Dobbie was named the 2008 ACC Player of the Year, announced May 9 by the Atlantic Coast Conference. She becomes the third player in league history to earn the honor twice, joining Jen Adams and Katie Chrest. Dobbie is the only player from Canada to earn the award.
